What pests to look out for in Winter

Not only do they gnaw and damage our furniture, they can pose a significant risk to our health too. So, when you have a pest problem in or around Boston, U.K, S.W.A.T Pest Control can help! Please read on, and you can see some of the most common pests you should be looking out for this winter.

Pests to look out for

You should be on lookout for rodents- like rats, and mats- and insects- like cockroaches, moths and spiders. Rodents and cockroaches are particularly concerning. They can carry several diseases, which can be passed on to humans through fleas, or droppings, for example.

Rodents

Rodents can fit through tiny spaces. And during winter, they’re more likely to sneak through, as they’re desperate to get into somewhere warm. Also, please note that despite popular belief, they don’t hibernate! So you need to make sure your walls have no cracks, and your doors have no gaps under them- you need to eliminate any spaces, which could allow them to sneak in!

Food waste is a common way to attract unwanted visitors. So, make sure you dispose of this properly. After all rats and mice can pose a threat to you and your home’s safety. They possess potential health risks by carrying disease, and can chew through your walls and electrical wiring!

Here are some signs, which could indicate a mice or rest infestation:

  • Greasy rub marks which come from rat’s oily fur
  • Animal droppings
  • Seeing gnaw marks

Cockroaches

In the UK there are two species of cockroach- the German and Oriental. Both like heated, dark spaces- where there’s water and food. And they will feast on just about anything. This includes faecal matter and food waste. They therefore also carry diseases, which can be harmful to humans. And, like rodents they’ll try their hardest to sneak into your warm property- they cannot actually survive temperatures lower than -6 degrees! You should particularly keep a lookout in your bathroom or kitchens.

Signs of a cockroach infestation include:

  • Damage to books or other leather objects
  • Unpleasant smells
  • Animal droppings
  • Seeing the insects, or eggs. Note that cockroaches are nocturnal. So, the best time to look for them would be after daylight.

Other insects

As mentioned cockroaches aren’t the only insects you should look out for this winter. Moths and ants may also make their way into your home. So, make sure your windows are shut and lights are switched off when not in use. This will not only stop attracting moths, but also save on your energy bills. To prevent ants coming in, make sure any damp piles of wood, logs, or leaves are not too close to your home- ants like damp places! And make sure your walls have no damage, as they’ll try sneaking into any possible cracks.
